This sculpture was made from a 28 pound limestone rock with a hammer and chisel. I have a kinship with indigenous people and this piece shows a young woman sitting down to rest carrying a baby on her back on a cradle board. The baby is wrapped tightly and then strapped to the board. I based this statue on the work of R. C. Gorman born in 1931 in Arizona.
Indigenous people wandered all over the pacific and some ended up on what is known as Easter Island in Chile. Sculpting large statues of a type of figure, the Rapa Nui people (Easter Island) or Rapa Nui (eastern Polynesia) somewhere between 1250 and 1500.
The heads were large and carved of volcanic rock by the Rapa Nui people in eastern Polynesia between the years 1250 and 1500. Recently, archaeologists have excavated below the head and some of the statues are 13 feet tall. The head I carved was from a 38 pound rock of pink alabaster.
